Itinerary
Malmö – Skanör
Start by picking up your bikes at the Travelshop at Malmö central station together with your tickets to Bornholm. Malmö is one of the best cycling cities in the world. But there is so much more to the city than just good cycle paths. What really makes the city worth a visit is the diversity, the markets, the restaurants, the parks, and the beach. Spend a few hours in Malmö and shop at Möllan, take a swim at the Ribban beach, have a cup of coffee at Slottsträdgården and visit the harbor in Västra Hamnen and Turning Torso. When you are done exploring Malmö, follow the south coast signs that lead you out of the city towards Skanör. The long chalk-white sandy beach around Näset was selected as one of Europe's most beautiful beaches. Here you get a relaxing beach life and inside Skanör harbour you can enjoy fish from local fish smokehouses, or the inn and stroll along the beautiful houses. In Skanör you will sleep well at Hotel Gässlingen.
Skanör – Trelleborg
Trelleborg is a city that stands out for its palm trees and many museums. Pay a visit to Trelleborgen, which dates to the 9th century. In the summer, a Viking battle takes place, which is a spectacular and fun event for the whole family. Trelleborgs Museum is located right in the center of Trelleborg. Both Söderslätt's and the city's history and various temporary exhibitions, art and handicrafts are shown here. Here, Trelleborg's long and exciting history, from the 7th century to the present, is told vividly and inspired. If your cycling holiday falls during the month of August, you must try the palm festival. The Palm Festival was founded in 1976 and is Sweden's oldest city festival with close to 100,000 visitors. The festival is the highlight of the year with a town party and market. You spend the night at the pleasant Hotel Dannegården, which is centrally located in Trelleborg.
Trelleborg - Ystad
On the way to Ystad there are many beach-friendly places to take a dip in the sea. But before Ystad stop at Sweden's southernmost cape Smygehuk. Enjoy the lovely view of the sea, look for the platform that has a compass rose that shows the distance to different places in the world. Feel free to try a wonderful mackerel sandwich from Smygehuk's smokehouse and finish with a soft serve ice cream. Ystad is a beautiful harbor town dating back to the 12th century. Ystad is known for its cobbled streets, small alleys, and half-timbered houses. In Ystad there is something for everyone to discover, St. Mary's Church, Sweden's oldest cinema Scala and the art museum. In Ystad, the detective films about Wallander were also filmed, in Ystad you can follow in Wallander's footsteps and experience the film locations. You rest at hotel Fritiden, they are located close to the central station, the marina, and the shopping streets. The hotel has both an indoor pool and a lovely roof terrace with a bar.
Ystad – Bornholm
Start the morning to look at the timetable, if you are an early bird, the first trip departs at 6:30 and you can then be in Bornholm just before 8:00. The ferry has many departures, and the boat trip takes about 80 minutes. Whole of Bornholm is filled with cycle paths, all of which are marked with road numbers. Depending on how long it takes depends on which route you take, which all have different distances. Everything can be adapted and if you don't want such a high pace, you of course choose shorter distances. The island is not very big. Around the island you cycle along coastal stretches, fish smokehouses and in the villages, you will find cozy streets and alleys with half-timbered houses, small shops, and good eateries. When you have finished exploring the sunny island of Bornholm, it is time to return to Ystad and hotel Fritiden. You can be flexible with the time, the last ferry leaves around 20.00 in the evening back to Ystad.
Ystad – Simrishamn
Between the charming medieval towns of Ystad and Simrishamn, you cycle through open countryside, apple orchards, sites from the Viking Age, castles from the Middle Ages and over golden rapeseed fields. This is a paradise for nature lovers, here there are many hiking and cycling trails to experience. The nature in this part of Skåne offers unique flora and exciting fauna. Something new awaits around almost every corner. Visit the fishing spots, the mighty Ale stones, the interesting vineyards, the Sandhammaren nature reserve, the cozy cafes, and the local restaurants. Or just walk over to one of the long white sand beaches, lie down in the soft sand and enjoy the amazing view. When you land in Simrishamn, you will meet a fishing village with a cozy town center, go for a city walk on your own and visit the harbor and enjoy the atmosphere from the sea. The bikes are returned at Hotel Svea, which is a stone's throw from the train station, where the journey takes you back home.
